COSPLAY

What is... COSPLAY?

Cosplay or Costume Play is one type of performance art in which participants don any costumes or accessories to represent a specific character of idea that usually taken from popular fiction in Japan, American cartoons, Sci-Fi, or even other popular cultures as well. For example, from manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, hentai, and movies.

History of Cosplay

Cosplay is a term that originated in Japan but based on English words, "Costume Play". The term was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi of the Japanese studio Studio Hard while attending the 1984 Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon. The coinage reflects a common Japanese method of abbreviation in which the first two moras of a pair of words are used to form an independent compound.

kosu (コス) + pure (プレ) = コスプレ kosupure

Cosplay can be divided into two parts:
  • Basic cosplay
  • Masquerade cosplay
Both types of cosplay involve trying to physically look like the character, including speaking like the character, memorizing quotes and so on. Masquerading, or "The Masquerade," usually refers to a cosplay competition where cosplayers demonstrate their skills in creating costumes, putting on skits, and in technical matters.
